Boost Your Memory- supplements,food etc

(NaturalNews) Where did I leave my keys? Who am I supposed to call again? What did I mean by that scribbled note, anyway? Everybody experiences these incidents of forgetfulness.

As we get older, these kinds of memory lapses can become routine, and are casually attributed to "advancing years" by many baby boomers, according to Dr. Heidi White, assistant professor of geriatric medicine at Duke University Medical Center.

Age isn`t the only factor in memory loss, however, says White. She notes that among possible causes for cognitive decline are medications (such as sedatives, which can dull the mind), depression (which affects concentration) , and hearing or vision impairment.

Baby boomers and the battle for the mind
Keeping the brain healthy much longer is a goal of many of us, especially people who, as of this writing, were 45 to 63 years old - otherwise called baby boomers. If you consider that a baby boomer turns 50 every 7.5 seconds, by the year 2024 there will be 115 million people over age 50 in the U.S.

Today, approximately 78 million people, about 26 percent of the total U.S. population, were not only born between 1946 and 1964 but are, say demographers and researchers, greatly concerned about loss of memory and the aging of the mind.

True failing memory is different from the forgetfulness of a busy person or the stereotypical absentminded professor. Clinically speaking, failing memory is often accompanied by a person`s declining sense of well-being, and is often described by symptoms such as a lack of mental clarity (brain fog), altered mood (as in depression), decreased mental abilities, worsening sleep patterns, and declining overall energy.

Age of Information Overload
Whence the brain drain? Some researchers believe our brains are overtaxed today. Not many would disagree that we`ve moved beyond the Information Age into the "Age of Information Overload." It`s believed that our cognitive processing, and maybe even our memory storage capacity itself, can become overburdened as we age.

To one extent or another, there`s little doubt that all of us are bombarded by work and personal e-mail, Internet spam and junk mail, faxes, magazines, 24-hour news, digital pages, telemarketer calls, cell phone voice-mail and even the arcane logistics of play-date scheduling for the kids after school!

Cognition is sensitive to a wide variety of nutritional factors, and modern nutritional science is uncovering that we can improve our mental powers effectively, and even powerfully, through a wide array of nutrients and supplements, including antioxidants, herbs, fats and other targeted dietary supplements.

A November 2008 review in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association pointed to benefits of a variety of bioactive nutritional supplement ingredients (often called nutraceuticals) , some of which we will look at, in slowing age-associated memory impairment. Vinpocetine and acetyl-L-carnitine were especially effective, followed by huperzine A; rhodiola; ginseng and alpha lipoic acid. The least effective compounds were the drugs, Aricept and Nemanda.

The brain train - vitamins to the rescue
Vitamin C. To test whether vitamin C protects against mental decline, called "cognitive impairment" in this study, researchers from Australia`s University of Sydney looked at 117 elderly people in a retirement community over a four-year period --- those who took vitamin C supplements and those who did not. Seniors who took vitamin C supplements experienced a lower incidence of severe cognitive decline. The authors concluded that, "Vitamin C might protect against cognitive impairment."

Vitamin E. Research from Italy and the U.S. has shed new light on vitamin E`s role in brain health. A July 2005 study by Italian researchers from Perugia`s Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics (the InCHIANTI study) included 1,033 participants aged 65 and older. The research group found that people with the lowest blood levels of vitamin E had the highest incidence of senile dementia and "cognitive impairment" compared to those who had the highest vitamin E levels.

Another 2005 study, this out of Chicago`s Rush Institute for Healthy Aging, studied 6158 people 65 years of age or older between 1993 and 2002, including a subset of 1,041 patients who were clinically evaluated. The researchers, led by Martha C. Morris, Sc.D., found that higher intakes of vitamin E were associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer`s disease.

Other recent studies have looked at different combinations of vitamins and minerals, with vitamins C and E as a foundation.

ALA anyone?
Alpha lipoic acid is a very powerful brain-friendly antioxidant that has been found to directly restore vitamin C and glutathione to their active forms (after they have been used up) and to indirectly restore vitamin E to its powerful form, as well.

In animals, alpha lipoic acid protects brains cells against beta amyloid plaque, the buildup of which is associated with dementia and Alzheimer`s disease. In fact, animal studies published in 2002 and 2003 showed that treatment with alpha lipoic acid prevented or reversed cognitive impairment similar to dementia in humans.

In 2001, researchers gave nine patients with Alzheimer`s disease 600 mg each day of ALA in addition to Aricept or Exelon for an average of one year. This was the first such study to find that treatment with alpha lipoic acid may be "neuroprotective" against Alzheimer`s disease and related dementias.

In a 2007 follow-up, 43 ALA-supplemented patients were observed for a period of up to 48 months. In patients with mild dementia, the disease progressed extremely slowly; in patients with moderate dementia, dementia progressed twice as slowly.

B is for brain
In the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, researchers looked at 69 people with Alzheimer`s disease, including 33 patients who were taking a multivitamin supplement of folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.

In the 66 patients who were available for the eight-week follow-up, the high-dose B-vitamin supplement significantly reduced levels of homocysteine, which is important since high levels of homocysteine may be associated with the breakdown of the myelin sheaths that encase nerves and may be partly responsible for the symptoms of Alzheimer`s- like dementia.

Botanical brain boosters
Ginkgo. Since stress in humans is associated with decreased memory and learning function, Polish scientists gave an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761 or Ginkgold) to rats that had been chronically stressed. According to their study, the supplement improved memory and cognition in all rats, including those that had been stressed.

The last 30 years have yielded a large body of evidence supportive of ginkgo supplementation for brain-boosting, although some studies have studied the wrong groups, have looked for the wrong results or have used too low a dose. According to 2000 review by New York University`s P.L. LeBars, daily dosages of 240 mg a day appeared to demonstrate the most benefit in patients with memory disorders or dementia.

Ginseng. In 2008, a group of South Korean researchers published the results of an open-label study in which patients with Alzheimer`s disease received Panax ginseng extract or a placebo for 12 weeks. In the ginseng-supplemente d group, all main measures cognitive performance began to show improvements and continued for up to 12 weeks. After discontinuing ginseng, the improved scores declined to the levels of the control group. According to the authors, "These results suggest that Panax ginseng is clinically effective in the cognitive performance of [Alzheimer`s disease] patients."

Pomegranate. A 2005 rodent study found that drinking pomegranate juice during pregnancy may lower the risk of hypoxia ischemia-related brain injuries (a condition caused by decreased blood flow and oxygen to the fetal brain) in babies. The authors said their results "demonstrate that maternal dietary supplementation with pomegranate juice is neuroprotective for the neonatal brain."

A more recent study in newborn mice, published in 2007, suggest that special compounds in pomegranate, polyphenols, should be further investigated as a potential treatment to decrease brain injury due to neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

Vinpocetine. Vinpocetine is a supplement that`s derived from vincamine, an extract of the periwinkle plant (Vinca minor). Widely used and studied in Europe for over 25 years, awareness of this product and the research behind is now starting to come into its own.

A 2001 review (meta-analysis) in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association by the University of Miami`s Bernd Wollschlaeger, M.D., winnowed down 39 vinpocetine studies involving 1,912 subjects into three studies - from 1986 through 1991 - involving a total of 174 patients treated with vinpocetine and 114 given a placebo.

According to Wollschlaeger, all three studies "suggest a significant [mental] improvement in the cognitive function of patients suffering from dementia or other symptoms of cerebrovascular diseases." Based on several mental-performance tests, the significant improvement in cognitive function, in these three studies, says Wollschlaeger, "suggest[s] a clinical application of vinpocetine in the early phases of mild cognitive impairment" before full-blown "senile dementia" or Alzheimer`s disease start to develop.

"Designer" supplements for brain support
Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC). A 2004 review of 21 double-blind, placebo-controlled studies using acetyl-L-carnitine in the treatment of "mild cognitive impairment" and mild Alzheimer`s disease showed significant improvements versus the placebo or "dummy" pills.

CDP-choline. A relative of phosphatidylserine (PS), cytidine-5-diphosph ocholine, or CDP-choline, has been attracting some recent research interest. In 2005, scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found, in an animal study, that long-term supplementation with CDP-choline may hold back memory impairment.

Huperzine A. Huperzine A is a purified substance derived from Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata). A 2005 paper on this supplement speculated that the beneficial effects in Alzheimer`s disease are probably due to several cell- and neuro-protective effects operating at the same time.

Food-based mental mojo?
In a 2004 observational study from the U.K. looking at dietary supplement use, people born in 1936 received mental ability testing in 1947 and later in 2000-2001. At age 64, cognitive function was better in dietary supplement users than in non-users, especially in those people who were also taking marine oil supplements.

Quality of mind = quality of life
Many would argue that quality of mind - a well functioning brain - is truly at the elemental core of quality of life; therefore, ways in which we can improve our mental abilities and functions, and fend off the memory and general cognitive declines associated with aging, should be more than welcome - especially when these ways are holistic, supplement-based, and without the profound unwanted side effects often associated with synthetic pharmaceutical drugs.

Braco: mystery healing gaze causes miracles

In a land once part of socialist Yugoslavia, across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, resides a small country with a deeply spiritual tradition and culture known as Croatia. Here is the birthplace of the great esotericist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf Schools. As Steiner sought to bridge science and spirit, a new unexplainable phenomenon of miraculous healing is uniting again fields too long kept apart in the west and which must reconcile in this age of Aquarius, the age where science comes to understand and explain the ancient wisdom of the sage and healer. Healing has literally come to all levels in the form of a gentle and humble man called Braco, whose nickname translates from his native Croatian to affectionately mean 'little brother'.

Since 1995, laymen, doctors and scientists alike have recognized Braco for his miraculous healing ability. It has created a great mystery for western science to appreciate and a great validation of the inner power and strength present within an individual - waiting to be called upon, waiting to be chosen and used. His gaze is his tool of transformation and healing, and over 200,000 people traveled to experience this man's silent gaze in 2008 alone. Everyone is asking how only five minutes of this man's gaze over can transform lives and influence spontaneous healing from severe, chronic and even untreatable illnesses of mind, body and spirit?

Parapsychologist, author and consciousness expert Drago Plecko, MSc., has studied western and eastern traditions to understand spiritual power and healing. He has written, "After I have been traveling all over the world for more than 30 years to search and find the secrets behind the mystery of spiritual healing, I finally found the biggest and most impressive power in my home country just a few steps from my own house." Mr. Plecko explains that some individuals can affect the human nervous system via intention by use of a "non-local reality". It is the power behind Braco's gaze that allows the anomalies of a human life to dissolve so that the life comes into greater balance and harmony.

One of Germany's foremost authorities on healers and healing, Dr. Harald Wiesendanger, author of 28 books and founder of the IAOH (International Agency for Outstanding Healers) has stated,

I was impressed by the reports of the participants, some of them were even doctors by themselves, who explained how these sessions with Braco have helped them: Even paralysis, allergies and tumors disappeared. But I was not only impressed by those reports, I was also impressed by Braco's behavior: In spite of the fact that thousands worship Braco like a saint, he has staid to be a very natural, decent person who has kept his humility. And he strongly adheres to his conviction that you should never make a business with something which you have been given as a present."

Braco, in the tradition of true ancient healers, does all his work for free and does not charge any money at all for his healings, nor does he accept any donations of money for this work. It may seem odd that he was once a successful businessman with a Masters degree in Economics, but his life changed in 1993 when he met a man who would become teacher and friend, the great bio-energy healer and prophet Ivica from Serbia. They would share only sixteen months together before Ivica's tragic drowning, but during this time he named Braco as his successor. Ivica also prophesied that Braco would only set foot in the United States after a great shift in consciousness took place amongst the people.

It is no coincidence that after the November election and Barack Obama's entry into office, the way was cleared for Braco's first visit to America. Everyone is now facing the opportunity to open in perspective and action to more balanced possibilities as our ill begotten economic, social, educational and political structures are challenged and crumble. Braco represents a new level of healing reality to consider in the very left-brain West with a greater underlying potential in each of us. I had the unique opportunity to talk and spend time with Braco and Drago Plecko over eight days and experience group healing sessions while attending the largest esoteric/UFO conference in the country at Laughlin, Nevada in February 2009. Here Drago Plecko presented the case of "The Mystery Man" with scientific findings and testimonials about Braco's work, while Braco himself demonstrated his powerful gaze during group healing sessions each day of the conference. This article is the first in a series about Braco, 'Super-Healing' and transformation.

Light Therapy, Circadian and Biorhythms

Light Therapy has been valued throughout history as a remarkable source of healing. Today, the therapeutic applications of light and color are being investigated in major hospitals and research centers worldwide. Results indicate that full-spectrum, ultraviolet, colored, and laser light can have therapeutic value for a range of conditions from chronic pain and depression to immune disorders.

The oldest form of light therapy is natural sunlight, which is the ultimate source of full-spectrum light. For those living in areas that see very little sunlight this time of year, there are other options; full-spectrum light therapy, bright light therapy, various forms of UV light therapy, syntonic optometry, cold laser therapy, and visual color therapy.

For treating SAD, white light therapy is often preferred over the full-spectrum light because the additional UV light found in full-spectrum light is not necessary to achieve the antidepressant effect of the therapy, and can be harmful to the eyes. Different wavelengths stimulate different aspects of our physiology, all playing a vital role in our functioning. We especially need natural light with its subtle variations that act on our well-being. The rhythm of dark and light from day and night and the full-spectrum of light is essential to our circadian rhythms (biological clock), endocrine, immune, sexual and nervous systems.

Cycles of light and dark play a huge role in our energy levels, sleep patterns and how we relate to our surroundings. Light and color therapy allow us to stay balanced through many ways including diet, meditation, light and color applications and even the clothes we wear.

Our Circadian Rhythm

This is our internal daily biological clock. This clock can be influenced by many different elements, such as light and darkness, time of day and temperature. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the clock shows us how our energy cycles its course through the 12 organ meridians over a period of 24 hours, spending two hours at maximal levels in each organ In general, when treating a patient in accordance with this biorhythm, the best time to treat an excess of energy is at or shortly before the time of greatest meridian activity, while the best time to treat depleted energy is following the peak times.

Biorhythms

Biorhythms are a method to predict three cycles in your life based on your birthday. These cycles are the physical, emotional and intellectual cycle. Each of these cycles goes through different phases: high, low and critical.

The scientists Dr. Hermanna Swoboda and Dr. Wilhelm Fliess discovered biorhythms at the turn of the century. Both scientists weren't working together but discovered biorhythms at about the same time. At the beginning of the last century, Dr. Wilhelm Fliess noticed identical rhythms in the case histories of his patients. He observed active and passive phases in the physical, emotional and mental aspects of humans. From these observations he derived the principle of the biorhythms: The physical curve with its cycle of 23 days, the emotional curve with 28 days and the mental curve with 33 days.

His interpretation of cycles are expressed when the curve of any cycle is above the midline, we experience a "high" in the corresponding field (physical, emotional or mental):

1. If it is the physical curve, you will feel bodily well and, for example, if you were to have an operation the body would be more resilient.

2. If it is the emotional curve, you will be in a good mood and your contact with other people will be positive.

3. If it is the mental curve, your thought processes will be sharper, concentration will be easier and you may have a lot of ideas and insights.

When the curve of any cycle is below the midline, we experience a "low" in the corresponding field:

1. If it is a physical low, you may feel weak and listless.

2. If it is an emotional low, you may feel miserable and out of sorts.

3. If it is a mental low, thinking can be foggy and concentration hard.

When any of the curves crosses the midline, this is a critical time in the corresponding field and if two curves cross the midline at the same point, this is a very critical time. Critical in the physical field means you may feel exhausted and it is better to avoid physical effort and operations. Critical in the emotional field means you may feel irritable and sad, and emotional outbreaks are likely so it is better to avoid conflicts and arguments. Critical in the mental field finally means sluggish thinking and it is better to postpone activities that demand a lot of concentration. Biorhythms can't predict or explain events, they can only suggest how we may deal with them.

Cardio treadmills : A Rescurer against cardio diseases(weight products and programs)

Treadmill is probably the best available equipment to burn fats from the body. For most of the people afflicted with high cholesterol and excessive fat deposition, treadmill comes as a rescuer against possibility of cardiac diseases. Most of the superior quality treadmills now a days come with various preprogrammed workouts specially designed to reduce high cholesterol or excessive fat in order to prevent cardiovascular diseases or possibility of stroke.

These treadmills are also equipped with belt to monitor pulse rate and echo level of heart that is displayed by display unit of treadmill. These superior treadmill models are known as cardiac treadmill as they are specifically meant for folks who are either anticipating cardiac complications or are already afflicted with it.

Cardiac treadmills could be also found at hospitals or with health care providers. Various cardiac tests are performed while a patient is put on a workout on a cardiac treadmill. One of the most common tests performed with treadmill workout is ECG. With the help of cardiac treadmill your heart's condition is analyzed. You get to know, how your heart works when it is put on stress. Cardio Treadmill also happens to be equipped with blood cholesterol level monitor.

There could be a number of other cardio features available in your treadmill. These treadmills offer an excellent cushioning system that ensures a completely jerk free workout. This jerk free deck is particularly helpful for cardiac patients. They comfortably undergo cardiac endurance test on these cardio treadmills.

While choosing a cardio treadmill for home you must consult an expert physical trainer and you should also seek opinion of your health care provider. Most of the reputed brands now a days come with their cardio models.

Most of the superior cardio treadmills come with lifetime warranty. Two very popular cardio models are Smooth 9.25X and Landice L8. Brand Landice offers other cardio models as well. These include Landice L7. Nordic track also offers a series of cardio treadmills. The brand happens to be credible. A cardio tread equipment would often be costlier than treadmills meant to serve normal exercise needs.

I would suggest new buyers of cardio treadmills to go through consumer reviews before choosing a treadmill as it will enable them pick the best possible cardio treadmill.

Vaccines as Biological Weapons?

(NaturalNews) There's a popular medical thriller novel in which a global pandemic is intentionally set off by an evil plot designed to reduce the human population. In the book, a nefarious drug company inserts live avian flu viruses into vaccine materials that are distributed to countries around the world to be injected into patients as "flu shots." Those patients then become carriers for these highly-virulent strains of avian flu which go on to infect the world population and cause widespread death.

There's only one problem with this story: It's not fiction. Or, at least, the part about live avian flu viruses being inserted into vaccine materials isn't fiction. It's happening right now.

Deerfield, Illinois-based pharmaceutical company Baxter International Inc. has just been caught shipping live avian flu viruses mixed with vaccine material to medical distributors in 18 countries. The "mistake" (if you can call it that, see below...) was discovered by the National Microbiology Laboratory in Canada. The World Health Organization was alerted and panic spread throughout the vaccine community as health experts asked the obvious question: How could this have happened?

As published on LifeGen.de (http://www.lifegen. de/newsip/ showne...), serious questions like this are being raised:

"Baxter International Inc. in Austria 'unintentionally contaminated samples with the bird flu virus that were used in laboratories in 3 neighbouring countries, raising concern about the potential spread of the deadly disease'. Austria, Germany, Slowenia and the Czech Republic - these are the countries in which labs were hit with dangerous viruses. Not by bioterrorist commandos, but by Baxter. In other words: One of the major global pharmaceutical players seems to have lost control over a virus which is considered by many virologists to be one of the components leading some day to a new pandemic."

Or, put another way, Baxter is acting a whole lot like a biological terrorism organization these days, sending deadly viral samples around the world. If you mail an envelope full of anthrax to your Senator, you get arrested as a terrorist. So why is Baxter -- which mailed samples of a far more deadly viral strain to labs around the world -- getting away with saying, essentially, "Oops?"

But there's a bigger question in all this: How could this company have accidentally mixed LIVE avian flu viruses (both H5N1 and H3N2, the human form) in this vaccine material?

Was the viral contamination intentional?

The shocking answer is that this couldn't have been an accident. Why? Because Baxter International adheres to something called BSL3 (Biosafety Level 3) - a set of laboratory safety protocols that prevent the cross-contamination of materials.

As explained on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ Biosaf...):

"Laboratory personnel have specific training in handling pathogenic and potentially lethal agents, and are supervised by competent scientists who are experienced in working with these agents. This is considered a neutral or warm zone. All procedures involving the manipulation of infectious materials are conducted within biological safety cabinets or other physical containment devices, or by personnel wearing appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment. The laboratory has special engineering and design features."

How Inflammatory Disease Causes Fatigue

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2009) - New animal research in the February 18 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience may indicate how certain diseases make people feel so tired and listless. Although the brain is usually isolated from the immune system, the study suggests that certain behavioral changes suffered by those with chronic inflammatory diseases are caused by the infiltration of immune cells into the brain. The findings suggest possible new treatment avenues to improve patients' quality of life.

Chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, and liver disease cause "sickness behaviors," including fatigue, malaise, and loss of social interest. However, it has been unclear how inflammation in other organs in the body can impact the brain and behavior.

The researchers found that in mice with inflamed livers, white blood cells called monocytes infiltrated the brain. These findings support previous research demonstrating the presence of immune cells in the brain following organ inflammation, challenging the long-held belief that the blood-brain barrier prevents immune cells from accessing the brain.

"Using an experimental model of liver inflammation, our group has demonstrated for the first time the existence of a novel communication pathway between the inflamed liver and the brain," said the study's senior author Mark Swain, MD, Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Swain and his colleagues found that liver inflammation triggered brain cells called microglia to produce CCL2, a chemical that attracts monocytes. When the researchers blocked CCL2 signaling, monocytes did not enter the brain despite ongoing inflammation in the liver.

Liver inflammation also stimulated cells in the blood to make an immune chemical (TNFá). When the researchers blocked the signaling of this immune chemical, microglia produced less CCL2, and monocytes stayed out of the brain. In the mice with inflamed livers, preventing the entry of monocytes into the brain reduced sickness behaviors; mice showed more mobility and social interaction. These findings suggest that people with chronic inflammatory diseases may benefit from treatments that limit monocyte access to the brain.

"Sickness behavior significantly impacts quality of life. Our findings further our understanding and may generate potential new avenues for treatment of these often crippling symptoms," said Swain. "The brain is the master coordinator of many of our bodies' defense responses, so it must be able to sense injury and inflammation in distant body organs. This study starts to explain the peripheral communication signals that activate the brain," said Nancy Rothwell, PhD, DSc, at the University of Manchester, an expert on brain inflammation who is unaffiliated with the study.

The research was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian Liver Foundation, and the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

6,000-year-old species of rice discovered in Meghalaya

6/3/09

Shillong, Jan 11: Meghalaya Mission for Indigenous Knowledge has found a 6000-year-old traditional species of rice in the Garo hills of the state.

This biological diversity is now an important genetic store for rice worldwide. Mira Nair's film - Still, the Children are Here - told exclusively through the voices of the Garos, follows two extended families in the village Sandolpara, as they grapple with survival and change in this native community. Elders say they are poorer today. "Even though we reap the same grain as the grandmothers, we are poorer," they say.

In Sandolpara, 6,000-year-old species of rice are still grown. Women are the caretakers of these varieties of rice. They select the right varieties for cultivation and handle processing and storage of rice. Men help in cultivation and manage the fields. "These hardy strains of rice must be protected and should not be contaminated by any hybrids or genetically modified (GM) crops," the document paper of the Meghalaya Mission for Indigenous Knowledge noted.

The draft document also pleaded that the government should provide subsidies to farmers for growing these traditional varieties, so that the traditional rice varieties are available to consumers at cheaper rates and can compete with already-subsidised rice from other parts of the country.

The vice chancellor of the Shillong-based North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Pramod Tandon said, "Our major objective is to conserve and conduct research in traditional knowledge and to improve the socio-economic conditions of the people." He said that the important gene centre located in the campus had not been given due consideration by the Union government, which funds this university. The gene bank contains rich depositories of traditional rice and citrus among other rare plants.

He mentioned water lily as a rare species now found only in Meghalaya. Earlier, some species of water lily were found in Siberia, Russia, though the climatic conditions in Meghalaya and Siberia vary to a large extent. "We have taken up the difficult job of micro-propagation of the water lily in a farmer's pond in Smit village," he said. The seeds of the water lily are eaten by the local people.

Among other rare plants are Dancing Girl, Holly Tree and Mishmi Getta. Dancing Girl varieties are under the women's empowerment scheme of the department of biotechnology (DBT). "Unplanned urbanisation, mining and quarrying have destroyed the biodiversity and ecology of the region, alleged Tandon. He disclosed that the Mishmi Getta was illegally exported to China for its medicinal value and how the Italians once indulged in biopiracy of the Texas Bacata, the extracts of which are used to cure breast cancer. The Khasiana variety of the Picher plant is grown in nitrogen deficient land in the state. Out of 13,000 orchid varieties, 560 alone are found in north-eastern India.

The Guwahati-based North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd has documented the methods of propagation and the use of several aromatic and medicinal plants like Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth), Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt), Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus Steud Wats), Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides Linn), Sugandhmantri (Homalo, ena aromatica Schott), Agar (Aquilaria agallocha Roxb), Sarpagandha (Rauvolfia serpentine Benth ex Kur), Pipali (Piper longum Linn), Amlakhi (Emblica officinalis Gaertn), Hilikha (Terminalia chebula Retz), Bhomora (terminalia belerica), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna Wight and Arn). Among other crops of economic importance are Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni-Nemsi, Vanilla planifolia Andrews and Brahmi or Bacopa monnieri (L) Wetts.

Recent Benenfits Of Tea …

We've all seen positive research results about the benefits of green tea. Well now there's a study documenting positive benefits resulting from drinking both green or black tea.

Dr. Lenore Arab, PhD, Professor, Department of Medicine and Dept of Biological Chemistry, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA explained, "This Meta analysis suggests that daily increase in consumption to three cups of tea per day could lower the risk of ischemic stroke by 21 per cent." Stroke is the second most common cause of death globally, claiming 5.4 million lives per year. It is a major cause of disability and has a significant impact on quality of life. Of the two types of stroke - ischemic and hemorrhagic - ischemic stroke accounts for around 83 per cent of all stroke cases.

The study results indicated that drinking three or more cups of green or black tea a day may reduce the risk of stroke by 21 per cent. And the more you drink, the greater the cuts in stroke risk, according to this meta-analysis conducted at UCLA on nine studies involving 4,378 strokes among 194,965 individuals.

Green tea contains between 30 and 40 per cent of water-extractable polyphenols, while black tea (green tea that has been oxidized by fermentation) contains between 3 and 10 per cent. Oolong tea is semi-fermented tea and is somewhere between green and black tea. The four primary polyphenols found in fresh tea leaves are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG),  and epicatechin (EC). Though no one is certain which compounds in tea are responsible for this effect, researchers have speculated that the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) or the amino acid theanine may be what helps. Antioxidants are believed to help prevent coronary artery disease.

"And we do know that theanine is nearly 100-percent absorbed," the head of the research team reported. "It gets across the blood-brain barrier and it looks a lot like a molecule that's very similar to glutamate, and glutamate release is associated with stroke. "It could be that theanine and glutamate compete for the glutamate receptor in the brain,".

"In recent years, a body of scientific evidence has shown that regular tea drinking can have an important role in healthy fitness," says Douglas Balentine, Ph.D., Lipton Institute of Tea. "This new study provides further support that regular tea drinking may be one of the most actionable lifestyle changes a consumer can make to help maintain heart health."

All these studies continue to contribute to our belief in the power of tea as an ingredient in AdvoCare products.
